No. 301 - 26 May

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a glorious week of spring sunshine! With the weather set fair for the next week too, it looks like our half term break will give us all plenty of opportunity for being outdoors. That’s certainly been a theme today as well, with lots of Fluffy activities taking place in the school grounds, and further afield, with children enjoying golf, the Guildford history trail, fun on the Downs, and lounging at the Lido!

Another theme this week came from our assembly series where we focused on the importance of friendships; being able to bear with one another, forgiving one another and repairing broken relationships has stimulated plenty of discussion across the classes. It’s great to be part of a community that’s founded upon these ideas. And Fluffy provides a secure platform on which to forge new friendships, fostering respect and empathy across the whole school. I do hope your child had a fantastic day.

At the juniors on Wednesday morning, we thanked all the children who had participated in the House music medley, also recognising the efforts of the music teachers and the encouragement of their parents for nurturing so much talent. With around 1/3 of the school taking part in this house event, selecting just a few performers from each house for the final concert was a tall order. Our house captains managed this brilliantly and the standard of performance was truly astonishing. One particular piece, performed on the piano by Heidi in Year 6 left many of the staff and children lost for words, moved to tears and spellbound. Her remarkable voice and heartfelt music-making will stay in our memory for many years to come.

I’m so thrilled to be able to share some lovely school family news with everyone. Many of you may have already spotted that Catherine Finniear, our much-loved reception teacher, is expecting a baby later in the year. She’ll be taking her maternity leave from the start of next term. I also wanted to let you know that Sarah Mackenzie, who teaches in Year 1, will be retiring at the end of July, taking a well-earned rest from the classroom. She has taught at Pewley for around 25 years and throughout that time, been an inspirational role model for both children and adults alike. Her kindness and skilful teaching will be sorely missed – nearer to the end of term, we will be celebrating her remarkable contribution to the profession and thanking her for her wonderful commitment to children’s learning.

With other part-time teachers adjusting their hours and JJ coming back part-time after her maternity, we are excited to let you know that three new teachers will be joining the school in September. I’m delighted to welcome Ben Stackhouse (one of our own trainee teachers), Scarlett Close, and Emma Williams to the teaching team for September. I have every confidence that all three will be superb additions to the school.

Have a super half term break and see you all on Monday 5th June for the final action-packed weeks of this academic year!

With love,

Clare

Thought of the week: It's rubbish - breaking Up. Are you a good friend? The power of forgiveness.
