No. 285 - 13 January
Dear Parents and Carers,
It’s been a really good first full week of term – I always enjoy the start of new topics, with children excited about the learning ahead. All the staff are full of enthusiasm and the children are refreshed and eager.
As a senior leadership team, we were glad to welcome a visitor to the school on Thursday to help us think deeply about our curriculum. Matthew Rixson works for Guildford Diocese and is responsible for school effectiveness across all the local church schools. He visited classrooms and talked to children, as well as looking at their work, and meeting with some of our subject leaders. I was delighted to hear him say how engaged the children were in their learning. He commented very positively about their sense of purpose and the high expectations that staff have. The teaching of reading at Pewley was a particular highlight – he loved the way reading was such a high priority. All the children he met were very proud to belong to HTPD, and displayed a “zest for learning and love of life”. We talked about the next steps for the school, and together worked out ways that we can continue to improve. It was a really helpful day and will enable us to make plans for the future.
Another really positive aspect of school life is our after-school clubs. We intend them to provide a rich variety of opportunities, with a lovely diverse selection on offer; we hope that they enable children to follow their interests, learn new skills, make new relationships and try something different. Our staff give up their time to run the sessions and work really hard to provide them free of charge. It’s been a bit disappointing of late to find that sometimes children are attending these clubs without really wanting to take part. While we understand the pressures of school pick-up times, we would ask you to make sure that your child really is interested in any club they attend, and that they’re not too tired at the end of the school day. It’s a shame when other children’s enjoyment is affected by those that don’t want to take part. Thank you for your thoughtfulness about this.
It looks like it might get a little chillier next week so do make sure your child brings warm layers to school. We carry on using the outdoors all the way through the winter months.
Have a great weekend everyone!

Our news this week is that we are planning a bedtime stories evening for Pewley children at the school, in their classrooms with their class teachers. Children and teachers wear onesies or pyjamas and listen to stories whilst enjoying hot chocolate and biscuits.
This is a free event and one the school ran for many years before lockdown and we’re so excited to be bringing it back.
The event will be on Wednesday 8th February, 5.15-6pm. Keep an eye out for a ParentMail containing all the information.
