No. 227 - 9 February

Dear Parents and Carers,

It’s been so good to finish the half term with a Fluffy Friday and, despite the weather and muddy puddles, everyone has had a wonderful time! Many children went off site, which made it much easier to spread out in school – there were children on the Downs, at the Spectrum, and out and about in town. Huge thanks to all those who volunteered, coming into school for the day to help out. If you’d like to do the same next time, put the upcoming Fluffy date in your diary – Friday 24th May!

It’s also exciting to start moving into the temporary classrooms and I can’t wait to see the little cabins in the car park being collected in the half-term break. The staff are relieved to have the car park available again for the second half of term! Thank you to those Pewley parents who collected early or helped out this afternoon.

You’ll have seen my ParentMail yesterday with information about arrangements from Monday 19th as well as the letter from Helen Murray and Deborah Pepper, our co-chairs of governors. For some of us it will have been sad news to hear that Pewley is to be part of the school rebuilding programme with such lovely positive memories stretching right back to 1961, but for many it will provide a reassurance that the government is committed to fulfilling their promise to remove RAAC completely from schools. This might well be a long-term project lasting several years – and the timeline is as yet unknown. In the meantime, I will continue to speed along the mitigation work by working with the Diocese and the DfE, so that we can return to the infants as soon as we can!

I’m sure that some of you will have specific questions so please do ask the office or chat to the teachers, or feel free to speak to me too. We know that conversations on WhatsApp can sometimes confuse the communication, so please feel free to ask about first-hand information rather than listening to rumours.

I’m so grateful to our governing body for the way they have supported the school through this time. They are such a determined group of individuals who voluntarily support the school so well! They have also worked hard to create an exciting job advert for the post of headteacher. I’m looking forward to meeting prospective applicants and showing them around.

With next week being the half term break, I hope that everyone has time to relax after a busy few weeks. If you mark the start of Lent with Pancake Day next Tuesday, enjoy the feast! Please thank the children for all their hard work and determination – they’ve made some super progress since the start of 2024 already! I look forward to seeing you all on Monday 19th February, ready for the second half of the spring term – with hopefully some sunnier days ahead!

With much love,

Promise of the week: “Whoever follows me will have the light of life.” John 8, v 12. The disciples face to face with Jesus. Whose paces do you pursue?

HTPD Parent Prayer Group

We are a group of HTPD parents who meet at least once each half term to pray for the school, both staff and pupils. At this time, our prayers are particularly focused on the situation with the Pewley Down buildings and the Headteacher recruitment process. Anyone who would like to join us is welcome. For more information please contact Anna Shaw 07736 457216 or Suzie Speed 07780 677151.

Cycle/ scooter safety

Please take care if your child cycles or scooters to and from school to make sure that they are safe, and that other pedestrians are safe too! Remember to keep a close eye on them all the time and ask them to dismount when there are lots of people about. We had a concerned parent reporting that a near-miss was rather dangerous!

If your child attends after-school clubs, do check the notices below by clicking on the junior or infant section.

World Thinking Day, Thursday 22 February 2024: Children who are members of Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts are very welcome to come to school in their uniforms on World Thinking Day. Pick Up Arrangements after half term:
We will have PUPS, Clubs+ and many after-school clubs using the outdoors from 3.30 onwards, therefore, we will need to lock the playground gate. If you are picking up from a club (3.45pm for Pewley, 4.15pm for HT), we will come and open that gate for you at those times. To pick up from PUPS or Clubs+ please access the school via the Addison Road gate and the office after school finishes.

Lunch: Week 2 menu for week beginning 19 February. Please note due to the delivery schedule, Monday and Tuesday menus have been swapped. Also, there will be no salad bar on Monday 19 February.

Arrangements after half term

At the start of the day, Pewley parents can now drop children directly into their classrooms at 8.30am (as you enter the playground and face the cabins, Year 2 will be on the right on the netball court, Year R are to the left against the wall of the basketball court, and Year 1 are facing them against the Cline Road fence). The teachers will all be at their classroom doors ready to welcome the children back!

At the end of the day, once the playground is unlocked, Pewley children will be returned to their parents and carers from the same location at 3pm. It’ll be a much nicer start and end to the day.

Because we will have PUPS, Clubs+ and many after-school clubs using the outdoors from 3.30 onwards, we will need to lock the playground gate. If you are picking up from a club (3.45pm for Pewley, 4.15pm for HT), we will come and open that gate for you at those times. Otherwise, to pick up from PUPS or Clubs+ please access the school via the Addison Road gate and the office after school finishes. (For regular PUPS users, do check the information from Sam regarding the new arrangements.)

Teacher-led clubs

Teacher-led clubs will start on Monday 19 February, 3.00 to 3.45pm. You will receive confirmation of which club your child will be doing later today via ParentMail.

Menu: week 2 beginning 19 February.

After half term we will be going back to a three-week cycle of lunch menus.

Whole school half term sponsored read

To support the school’s mission in fostering a love of reading and refreshing the library books, the PTAs are running our sponsored read across the whole school!

During half term (Monday 12th - Sunday 18th), children can read anything with words (books, magazines, comics etc.), or spend time being read to and get sponsored for it. Sponsorship should be based on the number of minutes spent reading during the week.

As a guide to sponsorship, one book costs approximately £4.00 - all donations will be gratefully received to this great cause.

A sponsor form was sent via ParentMail this week and a link to make donations is at:

Thank you for supporting our school!

The Great Annual School Quiz & Curry Nights - book your babysitter!

As we continue to be one school on one site, we are hosting our annual Pewley Down and Holy Trinity Quiz Nights at Christ Church, Waterden Road (thank you to Rev Nick Williams). And this event has been generously sponsored by local estate agent Hill Clements - thank you!

The HT Quiz & Curry night - Fri 22 March - Buy tickets here!

The PD Quiz & Curry night - Sat 23 March (this replaces the old March date due to the venue change) - Buy tickets here!

Everyone welcome! It will be mostly HT parents on the Friday night and mostly Pewley parents on the Saturday night - but you are welcome to attend whatever evening suits you best. You can start to gather your own team of 8 people or else we can put you in a team on the night.

We need volunteers to help with setting up, selling drinks, serving food and pack down. It’s always great fun and a good way to meet other parents. Please get in touch with your class rep if you are able to help.

Save the Date: HTPD WHOLE SCHOOL Fun Run!

  • Saturday 8 June, 1.30pm, Shalford Park. More details to follow.

Have a wonderful half term break - with lots of reading!
