JTLYK 28 February

Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome back to the second half of the Spring Term – and half way through the academic year already! As you will be aware, we are holding our parent consultations next week on Tuesday 4th and Thursday 6th March.  If you have not yet booked an appointment, please could we ask you to do so as soon as possible.  On the day itself, your child’s work will be out in the corridor for you to have a look through.  If you are running late, please let the school office know so that we can reschedule your appointment.

We have lots of exciting events coming up and have listed them below:

STEM/Curriculum Week

Next week is a whole school activity week which will enable the children to immerse themselves in Science, DT, Computing and Maths for a whole day! In addition, we have an author visit and a World Book Day activity afternoon. The whole week is inspired by traditional tales.

The children will stay with their normal class groups and teachers. PPA will remain on Tuesday.  Year 4 will have PE/swimming only on Wednesday, so please make sure your child is in smart uniform for the rest of the week.

Please note there will be no PE on Monday afternoon, so children should come in school uniform. We will all be attending the author visit. See details below.

Author Visit

Dear parents,

Next week is our STEM Book Week in which we will be celebrating the world of traditional tales and the science behind them. We are kicking off the week with a visit from the author Catherine Crawford whose book "Big Bad Wolf Investigates Fairy Tales" explores the scientific truths behind some of our favourite stories. Catherine will be doing a presentation at both of the schools on Monday the 3rd of March.

The books are available to buy at a discounted price of £6.00 (normally £7.99). If you go to Parentpay you can purchase books online from now. Books will get signed and given to your child after the event. Please make clear the name of the child and the class. Please order by the end of today (Friday) if you want the child's name included in the signing. You can still order books up until Sunday night but they will just get a signature.`

Sponsored Read

We hope you and your child are taking part in the sponsored read which ends on March 7th.  It is an easy way to raise money for our school library!  If you would like a spare form, please get in touch with one of the year 4 teachers

Crazy Inventions Exhibition

Year 4 children will make and exhibit a crazy invention at the end of the term.  Please support and encourage your child to complete the planning format by Monday 3rd March at the latest.  The teachers will then review all the inventions and talk to the children if there are any tweaks or changes that need to be made.  Children will need to make their invention at home and bring it in on the 31st March.  We will be holding an exhibition for parents that day starting at 2 pm.  Further details to follow!

Dapdune Wharf Trip

We have organised a half day trip to Dapdune Wharf in June as part of our ‘rivers’ topic.   Each class will visit for half a day on either Monday 16th, Thursday 19th or Friday 20th June. Further details to follow.

High Ashurst Residential Trip

Our annual residential trip will be on Thursday and Friday 26 and 27th June 2025 at High Ashurst near Dorking. There will be a meeting on Wednesday 23 April at 7pm when we will share all the details you need to know!

Maths

We continue to practise using times tables at school in preparation for the multiplication check in June.  Please make sure that your child is practising their timetables regularly!

This week we learnt about measuring in kilometres, metres and centimetres. We looked at equivalent measures and how to calculate the perimeter of shapes.

English

We introduced our new book ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes this week. We also used the text as inspiration for our own Haiku poems. We spent a lovely lesson on Thursday, outside in the sunshine, drawing chalk symbols for our Haiku syllables.

In SPaG we practised changing verbs from present tense to past tense. The spellings for next week are:

hopped, hoped, filed, filled, happened, preferred, laughed, promised, demanded, suggested

We will check these on Monday 3 March.

Science

We have had a very exciting week investigating the ‘states of matter’. The children worked scientifically observing and communicating the results of heating substances to see if they were making reversible or irreversible changes. Ask your child what they found out!

PE

To the delight of many, football skills are being learnt this term! We learnt how to dribble around obstacles skilfully and carefully to increase accuracy.

RE

This week we learnt about the final covenant that God made with Jesus. The children had a really good discussion about all the different covenants we have learnt about in the Old Testament and how these shaped the Jewish people. We then compared them to the New Testament Covenant of Communion and discussed what effect this has on Christians.
