Y3 JTLYK 9 May
Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had a fantastic week, with the children fully immersing themselves in our World War II topic. On Thursday, we took the children to Guildford High Street and Guildford Castle to see the flags being raised as part of the town’s celebrations marking 80 years since VE Day. The children had great fun taking part in the event.
In Maths, we have finished our unit on mass and capacity and the children should now feel confident adding and subtracting capacities and volumes. As children have not yet explored numbers beyond 1,000, there was no requirement to cross 1 litre with addition or subtraction, but children have used their knowledge of 1,000 ml being equivalent to 1 litre to subtract from whole litres.
Can you have a go at the following question?
This week in English, the children have been learning about World War II and have each created a "flat evacuee"—a character with their own personality and backstory.
As part of our writing project, the children have been writing a letter to accompany their evacuee, asking the recipient to look after them for a short time and then return them with a report of what they’ve done together (this could be a written note, drawings, or photos).
We would like your help in choosing an appropriate person for your child to write to—someone outside your household who would enjoy taking part in this project (e.g. a friend, relative, or family friend).
We kindly ask that you send in an envelope with a stamp and the recipient’s address clearly written on it. Please hand this to your child’s class teacher by next Tuesday.
If your child would like to send their letter abroad, please ensure the correct international postage is used. If you would like to help your child translate their letter into another language, we are happy to send a copy home for you to work on together. Once all the letters are finished, we will post them as a class.
Best wishes,
The Year 3 Team

This week we are looking at the phoneme /sh/ as in shoulder. Please do talk to your child about the meaning of these words and if you would like to adapt them too and practise easier spellings with the /sh/ phoneme, then please do!
