It’s fantastic to see this important day marked on the High Street and through local celebrations so communities can honour the many sacrifices that secured the freedoms we enjoy today. Year 3 marked the 80th anniversary of VE Day, by walking through the High Street to view the flags which had been raised for the occasion. They noticed that the Abbott's Hospital, Guildhall and Castle had all risen a flag that morning. The children sat within the castle grounds to share diary entries written by children who were living in the local area during the week of VE 80 years ago. Many members of the public enjoyed seeing the children holding their own flags and were very interested in what the children had been learning in their WWII history lessons.

A visit from a classic bus allowed for a fun comparison to a modern bus, and the children especially loved sitting in the driver's seat. The week's excitement peaked with the arrival of a McLaren sports car, whose "butterfly" doors and sporty interior left everyone mesmerised.

Our incredible librarian, Geraldine, spends time each week with every class, but her phenomenal children’s book knowledge came into its own this week. I don’t think there was a book I came across in the Eco Team run book swap that she wasn’t familiar with! I hope your child came home with a good new read, whilst giving a home to and re-cycling and old title!

Your donations will be taken to the North Guildford Foodbank on Monday. It was great to celebrate Harvest at both sites, with such an astonishing gift for the food bank and an ever-growing contribution to the charity Home Start, Guildford who supports parents in our local area who have at least one child under 5 years and who are dealing with issues such as isolation, poor mental health, sickness, disability, domestic abuse and difficult relationships to “embrace the future with hope and confidence”.

The children had the opportunity to take cuttings from a plant, which they potted and brought home. They also studied succulents, learning how these plants have adapted to store water and examined various species from rainforest environments.
