Intent – The Vision

At Holy Trinity Pewley Down, we believe in the value of the visual arts as both a practical and creative subject. Through working in and looking at a range of media, and by taking inspiration from great artists, crafts makers and designers, the visual arts offer an opportunity to explore imagination, generate ideas, acquire knowledge and skills and as a result, to develop the artist within each child. The visual arts can help children to become confident, communicative and independent individuals.

Implementation – How we achieve our goal

At HTPD it is our intention to deliver an arts curriculum that develops proficiency of skill, creativity, personal expression and reflection, and a greater understanding of self and the wider world. Art lessons give children the chance to observe, explore and investigate, as well as to see the world through the lens of those from other cultures and times, and to “imagine the journey in another’s footsteps”. Children are given a range of experiences through our art curriculum, and lessons are taught as a learning journey, where process is valued as highly as product. Children work alongside both their class teacher and a specialist teacher to develop and improve their skills in the visual arts and creativity, tracking their progress through use of art journals.

We believe that every child should be given the opportunity to develop as an artist and as such, we promote inclusivity, equal opportunities and personal reflection in art lessons.

Impact - How do we know our vision has come to fruition?

At the end of their time in Year 6, our students have experienced working in a variety of media, on varying scales, both independently and in collaboration, and creating work based on a range of themes.

By the end of KS1 children are taught:

to use a range of materials creatively to design and make products
to use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination
to develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space
about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work

By the end of KS2, pupils have been taught to develop their techniques, including control and use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design. They will have learnt:

to create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas
to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay]
about great artists, architects and designers in history
