Sustainability and Climate Change
At Holy Trinity Pewley Down School, we help children understand the world they are growing up in and the part they can play in looking after it. We take a practical approach to sustainability, linking learning in the classroom with sensible choices about how we care for our school environment.
We are passionate about protecting the environment and making our school community more sustainable. Each class has two Eco Team representatives who meet regularly to share ideas and lead projects that help reduce waste and improve how we look after our school and the planet.
Our sustainability work includes reducing single‑use items, improving recycling and developing composting, using energy more carefully and encouraging responsible habits and finding ways to save water while learning about why water matters around the world. We also work to improve our green spaces, help pupils connect with nature and promote walking, cycling and other low‑carbon ways of travelling to school. Sustainability is increasingly woven through our lessons and school life so that children can understand environmental issues and feel empowered to make a difference.
Our children have regular and meaningful opportunities to learn outdoors and we are proud of the beautiful natural spaces within our school grounds that support this learning. Through pupil voice and leadership roles, children are encouraged to make a positive difference and recognise their responsibility as citizens of the future.
We are committed to building on our progress with meaningful, long‑term goals that support both our pupils and the planet, in line with the Department for Education’s Climate Change and Sustainability Strategy.
Most recently, we are proud to have taken part in The Big Plastic Count, the UK’s largest investigation into plastic waste. Children and families worked enthusiastically together to count plastic packaging at home, helping pupils build a stronger understanding of how everyday choices affect the environment. By joining in, our pupils made a real contribution to a nationwide movement working towards reducing plastic waste and creating a more sustainable future.
A huge thank you to everyone who took part - your efforts really made a difference! Keep an eye out for our next eco mission coming soon.
