Dear Parents and Carers,

Today we launched our Eco-focus with a “pre-owned and proud” fashion show! The children seemed very excited to explain where their outfits had come from. It’s really helped to emphasise how much we’re keen to “reduce, reuse and recycle” resources this year. We’re hoping to see less waste, more care for each other’s things (as well as our own!), and a deeper understanding of looking after the world. I hope your child talked about it all enthusiastically. Hopefully, there will be less lost property as a result, although please do continue to name everything! It makes it so much easier to reunite items of clothing with their owners! Name labels are great – but a permanent marker works just as well!

At both sites, our eco-teams are getting busy and class eco-reps are taking their responsibilities really seriously. If you or your child has a good idea, ask them to share it with their eco-rep who will hopefully put the best ideas into action!

Similarly, we’ve seen democracy in action with our school council getting elected and starting the year’s business. It’s so good to see the councillors behaving with respect for their peers’ opinions, listening carefully to opposing viewpoints and representing their classes with passion and commitment. What a welcome relief compared to the disturbing scenes from Parliament this week. We will continue to promote empathy, respect, kindness and tolerance at HTPD whatever happens on our television screens.

With the term marching on, I’m already starting to show prospective parents for 2020 around the school – do mention our tours to any friends with younger children. It’s so lovely to be able to show new families how quickly the children in Year 3 and Year R have settled in! They seem so at home already! And just in case you know of someone new to the area, we do have the last couple of Year 3 places available now. Call either school office if you’d like details.

Have a great weekend everyone.
With best wishes, Clare

HT Sport

We have a new Year 6 Young Leaders Sports Crew! Congratulations to; Emily, Rebecca, Emma, Holly, Honey, Ruben, David, Charlie, Ben and Harvey. The Crew will be going to Spectrum next week with Millie to be trained alongside all the other Guildford primary schools Sports Crews.

In PE this week Y5 and Y6 took the Bleep test and lived to tell the tale! The bleep test is a multi-stage fitness test in which the children do 20m shuttle runs in time to recorded bleep sounds until the bleeps get too quick for them. It measures each child's maximum fitness level. Well done to the children who all tried their hardest. We will test them again next term to see if their fitness levels have improved.

Can we remind parents that all jewellery including watches and fit-bits have to be removed for all PE lessons; our uniform policy states no jewellery at any time for H&S reasons so it is vital during PE lessons that it is not worn. If your child has pierced ears then we ask them to remove earrings for the lesson or tape their ears. This is in accordance with Health and Safety guidelines issued by Surrey County Council.

We have a very busy week of HT sport coming up. The Y5 and Y6 girls are playing netball against QE on Tuesday and Wednesday and the Y5 boys are playing football against Worplesdon on Wednesday. All are away fixtures but this means that certain clubs will not run as teachers will be at these fixtures. On Thursday we are hosting the first Guildford Primary Schools Cross Country where runners from twelve schools will be battling it out on Pewley Downs. The playground will be open from 3.30pm for parents to use for parking and so Y5 basketball club on Thursday will not run.

The following clubs are cancelled next week:
Wednesday - Y5 Basketball
Thursday - Y3 Basketball

Spaces are full for the Year 4 Dodgeball on Thursday with Paul.
We still have just a few spaces for Year 3 Dodgeball after half term, please email Laura S : lauras@htpd.surrey.sch.uk

Dear All

We are fast approaching the first PTA committee meeting of the year - Tuesday the 8th October at 7.30pm in Rogues but at the moment we are still light on people who will be at that table. We desperately need classroom reps for Year 2 and could do with some additional support for Reception, particularly from Willow.

Asks of class reps would include:

  • Attending committee meetings once a term on average
  • Assisting with cake sales after school once a term and organising coffee mornings/evening socials
  • Helping out where you can at fetes/other events in the year (but we recognise that you all have other non PTA commitments)
  • Having fun and enjoying the experience

A huge thank you to all those who have volunteered so far. For those we haven't met then Jo and I look forward to meeting you soon.

FOR ACTION - Please contact samludlow@yahoo.co.uk or joannamarkwell@yahoo.co.uk if you are able to fill any of the other posts, or if you have fantastic fund raising ideas!

FOR YOUR INFORMATION - We are excited at the prospect of the year ahead and have been looking at dates for the coming months. The school disco date is tbc as the original date was a bit tight, but we are planning to show the last group rugby match on the big screen on that day instead.

Rugby - 12th October in the school hall
It's a 9am kick off so we will be selling bacon sandwiches, teas and coffees. The plan is to bring a proper coffee machine and we would ask that people bring their keep cups etc as we work towards waste reduction. Coffee will be cheaper and you save us washing up!

If the morning is a success, for England and the PTA, then we can try and show other matches too!

FOR ACTION - in order to ensure we cater correctly, we will be taking pre orders for food and drink. The order form will be sent out next week, please look out for them and ensure they are returned by the 10th October so we can get to the shops!

And also please hold the date for the Christmas Fete on the 7th December.

In addition, we have also been talking about wine tasting events, sporting events and other fun and will be sending out a short survey monkey in the next couple of weeks to assess interest in both the events and also what people are willing to pay for this.

To note, in case you hadn't picked up on it already, we will be taking a focus on sustainability this year. This is in line with the schools focus and is incredibly important. We had heard that there was been a challenge posed for us to become a single use plastic free PTA this year. Whilst we need to balance this with other environmental concerns such as reducing food waste we are prepared to take on this challenge as much as we can, but will need help and support to do this.

Have a great week!
Sam and Jo

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for scrolling all the way to the bottom of the website to hear our news this week – hope your thumb isn’t too sore! We’ll probably send it as a separate link from next week as appreciate it is a bit of a pain to get to.

HTSC Meeting
We had our first meeting on Monday – thank you to everybody that came to the meeting or contacted us with their ideas beforehand. It was lovely to meet you all and it was very refreshing to have so many different ideas and fundraising experience in the room. We are working up some of them into our programme of events for this year, as well as trying to be more environmentally friendly where possible. We have a very clear goal for our fundraising this year: we have a target of £50K to replace the astro-turf pitch which all our children have benefitted from in recent years and this will allow us to do so for many years to come. Pitch 2020 is on its way and there will be more details from us and the school over the coming weeks.

Class reps
We still need reps for all the Year 5 classes and for 3C. Please contact helen@thomasday.co.uk if you are able to help. Thank you.

Our first event is Bingo night on 12th October in the school hall from 6pm - 8pm. It is a really fun evening for the whole family of all ages and is hosted by the brilliant Jes Moon. Ticket price includes a fish and chip supper from Seafare and are available to order now – please check your child’s bag for a form over the next couple of days or download a copy from the Parentmail and hand to the office with your payment. If you have any questions, please email helen@thomasday.co.uk and I’ll endeavour to get back to you as soon as I can.

Dates for your diary:
Weds 9th October – deadline for Bingo ticket orders
Sat 12th October from 6pm – Bingo night! Forms are in bookbags or look out for a Parentmail this weekend with an attachment.
Mon 14th October 8pm @ Rogues - Bonfire Night and Christmas Fair planning meeting (everyone welcome to help plan our next 2 events)
Fri 8th November – Bonfire Night
Fri 29th November from 6pm – Christmas Fair

Wishing you a happy weekend!
