11 May 2012

Dear Parents

I do hope that you and your families enjoyed the long weekend. The weather didn’t really lead to getting much done or going out. Philippa and I walked round the corner to Witley National Trust Centre and visited a living exhibition of Witley at War. We experienced the NAAFI CafĂ© and heard a talk about the Home Guard. We also saw pictures taken during the World Wars, when Witley and Milford Commons were covered in Army camps.

Year 3 have also been finding out about World War II. Last week they had a great trip to Henley Fort at the top of The Mount in Guildford; this gave them a great deal of knowledge about ARP Wardens and the Home Guard. The children were thrilled to see the wide variety of gas masks. This week they had an evacuee experience which started at London Road Station where they were left by their parents and ended back at school to be met by the mayor and given to their new families (luckily their own parents!). In between, they walked around Guildford seeing sites of bombed out houses and where doodle bugs landed, they met local people who told them about Guildford in wartime, including Gertrude ‘best call me Gertie and leave out the rude part!’ wonderfully played by our very own Librarian Geraldine Tame.

As well as our valuable knowledge of local and recent history, there is an underlying theme of how tragic and wasteful war is and how we should strive for peace. For this reason we also remember the Holocaust, not to point blame, but be aware that great evil can exist and we all need to be vigilant to guard against it. A lesson for all of us.

Do have a peaceful weekend.

May I ask all parents who drive to and from school to park safely and considerately at all times please?  Just recently we have had several telephone calls from our local residents to say that they have been unable to enter or leave their premises because cars, driven by our parents, have been parked across driveways.  We have also had a visit from a member of the local Community Police team this week with the same request.  Your co-operation in this matter would be much appreciated with immediate effect.

Maths Resources
Coming soon for the Summer... Maths Resource pages for parents and children to access at home.  What types of resources would you like to see on our website for maths?  Some examples...how to form numbers, times table sheets and grids, number bonds to 5, 10, 20, 100,  100 squares, useful websites?

At the start of the Autumn Term we will be running Maths Curriculum sessions for parents.  What information would you find useful?

We hope the Maths Pocket Poster booklets have been helpful for Years 3-6. There are just a handful left at £2 a booklet - available from the office.  More are on order so if you've missed out we will let you know when they arrive.  They will be available at Pewley for Year 2's as well this term.

Please email the maths team at traceyd@holytrinity.surrey.sch.uk and let us know your ideas!

SATs Week – Year 6
Just a reminder for Year 6 to get some good sleep this weekend! Please remember pencils and pens and water for the brain! If your child is ill just let the office know, as usual and we can make alternative arrangements. Good luck to all.

School Uniform
Please note there is a new order form available for ordering Junior School uniform. Small sizes (5-6) are available through the Infant School and we will no longer be supplying House back packs as requested by school. This can be downloaded from the website uniform pages www.htpd.surrey.sch.uk/The-School/Parents/Uniform/Junior.aspx

Choir at Holy Trinity Church this Sunday at 9.15
Looking forward to seeing the choir this Sunday for the rehearsal of Will Todd's Anthem at 9.15am; this is before the service at 10am. Please remember to be wearing smart school uniform.  Thank you.

Head Lice
We have cases of head lice at school, please check your child and treat accordingly. For more information on how to treat visit www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Head-lice/Pages/Treatment.aspx

Sainsbury’s and Tesco Vouchers
Thank you to all of our parents who donated their Sainsbury’s and Tesco vouchers. We have collected nearly 11,500 from Sainsbury’s and 5,010 from Tesco.  An order for some sports equipment will be posted off soon!

There are four quite new and in good condition tables available for anyone who would like to collect them. We have had to replace them, as the high usage of tables in school life can, result in the legs working themselves a bit loose! This would not be a problem in a home setting. The tables are 1.60m x 0.80m and are 0.72m high.

Please could you check your pegs, bags, car, at home for Finnan Waterfield's waterproof coat!  It is royal blue/black, age 5-6, with his name in it.  Last seen on the pitch 2 weeks ago - it must be somewhere!  Many thanks. Sara 07833 732453.

Guildford Summer Festival
Every year Guildford Summer Festival brings you a whole host of activity to keep you entertained. The next Festival will take place from 1 June to 31 July 2012 and incorporate events for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the Torch Relay. Take a look at the calendar for all the events, download a brochure or come and pick up your brochure from the Tourist Information Centre.

From John Redpath, a parent : I am raising funds for County School in Guildford, a secondary school that is still small enough to care and has fantastic and dedicated teachers, the problem is the building leaks/floods and the dining hall is hopelessly too small.  So I am helping to raise, along with many others, matched funding towards the refurbishment project.  The challenge is: ABSEILING OFF THE SPIRE OF GUILDFORD CATHEDRAL on 14th July 2012. Naturally you are all welcome to come and watch but even more welcome to donate towards the fund at:  http://www.justgiving.com/John-Redpath.  Thank you.

Dear Parents, Elise Close (6C) is fortunate enough to be going to Sierra Leone this half term, in support of a charity called Street Child Elise will be spending two days onsite at the children's centre in Makeni and will also complete a 5km sponsored run out in the equatorial heat.  We have been advised that any clothes for children aged 10-18 would be most gratefully received. If you have any clothes for children/ young adults of this age, suitable for a hot climate, or any unwanted toys (robust, no batteries or power source required), Elise would be thrilled to take these to the Makeni centre.  Please send in a bag marked 'Street Child - Elise Close 6C'. If your child wanted to enclose a handwritten note, I am sure it would be delightedly received too!  Many thanks, Gaby Close.
