Dear Parents and Carers,

This week I went with Year 6 to the annual leavers’ service at the Cathedral for all the children who attend Guildford’s church schools. It’s the first of several events which mark their move on to secondary school and is always a memorable occasion. Seeing our children reflecting on their time at HTPD with such warmth and happy memories, I felt a sense of satisfaction that our school’s vision is so clearly lived out.

Back in school, the children wrote a summary of what HTPD has meant for them. I want to share with you some words from one of our students, Hana as she looked back on the last few years:

Children thrive in joy, freedom and when challenged to accomplish. Our school values are of great importance; so is equality, positivity and respect.

Schools not only educate us, but teach us how to be successful people and citizens – they teach us the fundamentals of life. We should also learn how to cope under pressure, how to have courage and always persist and persevere.

Our school values tell us that we are all equal and unique in our individuality.

Everyone who is willing to respect everyone, show enthusiasm, follow our values and do what is right is welcome into our community.


Also this week, we were delighted to take part in District Sports. Competing against some great opposition this year, we were thrilled to come away with the trophy! Every point won by our larger than ever team contributed to the win – so well done to everybody who took part.

Thought of the week: It’s rubbish…panic! How do you stay calm?

INFANT

Sports Day, Tuesday 9 July, 9.15 am
Parents are invited to join us for Sports Day. Please wait on the field after drop-off; we aim to start at 9.15am and expect to be finished before 11.00am. Children will be competing in their house groups and these will be clearly marked. Please stand at the outside edges of the field to watch your children.

Year 2 packed lunches
New Year R children will be coming to the move-up days on 3 and 10 July and staying for lunch, and we would therefore request that: Chestnut Class bring in a packed lunch on Wednesday 3 July, and Walnut Class bring a packed lunch on Wednesday 10 July.

Key Rings
We are having trouble closing the trays in the classrooms and therefore, reluctantly, have to ask that children remove any key rings from their book bags.

Lost:
Gabriella Detomaso, Willow Class, has misplaced her blue M&S cardigan which is named.

Shoes for Nicaragua
In Nicaragua, children are often not allowed to attend school if they can't afford shoes. We are collecting used children's shoes, any kind (but especially black school shoes) to send out to Nicaragua. So, if your child needs new shoes for the next academic year, this is the perfect opportunity to do something great with the old ones. Just send them into school, between now and early September and leave in the box at the lower entrance at Pewley Down. Many thanks, Laura (Ben, Walnut Class)

SUMMER FAIR 6th July
Thank-you for all the amazing donations today! Please keep them coming, the boxes will remain outside all week. We still need lots more booty bags, bottles and chocolate please. Please also check your year group hampers and where possible fill any gaps in these much sought after raffle prizes. Remember to keep selling your raffle tickets to family and friends (aged above 16 years old), more can be found in the school office if needed. There are some great prizes this year including the luxury hampers put together by each year group and the star prize this year is a Nintendo Switch kindly donated by our sponsors Cavender. Return sold and unsold tickets with any cash to the office by 5th July please.

Games bands: These have proven popular but there are still a few left so if you are interested please drop your reply slip and cash off at the office. For £5, the wearer gets unlimited goes on all the games at the fair, as well as one go each of the very popular lucky dip and Panning for Gold stalls

New FOPS Committee needed for 2019/20: Many of our current members of FOPS are having to step down this year due children moving on to HT, and personal or professional reasons. With this in mind, we would love to have a prepared committee to hand over too in time for September. HTSC

It’s nearly the end of term and for the HTSC the end of the fund raising year. We’d like to thank each and everyone of you for your help, support, generosity and just generally all round good egg-ness! We’ve had a phenomenal year - you have helped raise around £20,000 which has already funded a set of new iPads! Kirsty (our interim treasurer) is still counting all the money and will have a grand total soon.

We will submit the accounts at our AGM, which will be held at School on Thursday 12th September. We hope you can all make it - you are all members of the HTSC and are welcome along! Lastly, please all have a think about being active in the HTSC. We need class reps for next year, committee members, treasurers, admin and Chairs to help manage and organise the year’s programme. Do please let the office know if you think you can help out. Steph and I have had a brilliant time this year running the HTSC and can certainly recommend it as a great way to get involved in the school community.

Dear Parents and Carers,

My week has been so varied – one of the best reasons to be a headteacher; no day is ever the same! On Monday I travelled up to Shropshire to join our Year 6 children on their residential visit to Preston Montford. Whilst there, I was able see the culmination of our teaching and learning as the children come to the end of their HTPD journey. Seeing our school values lived out so well really encouraged me; I want to write and tell you about it. Whilst there, I took part in the annual trek across the Stiperstones – a stunning area of natural beauty, I taught the children about how the place where we were staying leads the way in thinking about sustainability and eco-issues, and I donned the costume of a Victorian school mistress before spending the morning in the Blists Hill school room. All of these different activities provided another reminder to me of how, at the end of their time at HTPD, the children truly are living life to the full. Here’s just a sample of what I saw:

Zest for learning and love of life: From finding out about the endangered habitat of the Emperor Moth in the Stiperstones’ heather, to learning what a weather station is, to measuring river speed, to improving on packed lunch making skills and how to put a duvet cover onto a duvet, all the children in Year 6 have learnt with determination, zest and enthusiasm.

Seeing heaven in the moment: Children noticed birdsong, had time to play without interruption, and soaked up the beautiful surroundings of the Shropshire countryside.

Embracing the future with hope and confidence: Even when at their most tired, feeling a bit anxious and a little homesick, children talked about the highlights of the day to cheer themselves up and settled into their beds for a good night’s sleep.

Imagining the journey in another’s footsteps: Stepping back in time to imagine the lot of children who lived their lives so differently – when children were “seen and not heard”, the Year 6 children reflected on how much they love the way that at HTPD, children today are valued, heard and given freedom to flourish. They are determined to ensure that these human rights are given to all children everywhere.

Treasured and loved as a unique child of God: Spending long days with the whole year group and seeing their fantastic characters and personalities thriving, I reflected on the excellent relationships that our staff work so hard to create with each individual child. No single child is ever the same as another, each one learns something different during the week away, each one notices something special and each one contributes to the whole community in a unique way.

It was certainly worth taking the time out of school to travel up to see them!

And then I re-joined those in Guildford on Thursday to meet and greet our new Year 3s. Spending all day, settling children in and showing them around our junior school, then having the chance to welcome their parents too at an evening meeting, it was great to be back to begin a new chapter in the school’s life! They all settled in so quickly – I’m looking forward to September already!

Do remember that Monday is our Midsummer Holiday. We will all return to school on Tuesday 25th, giving everyone a well-deserved mini-break before the exciting last few weeks of term. Enjoy a long, leisurely weekend.

Dear Parents and Carers,

I’m sure I’ll be seeing many of you this evening at the junior school summer fair. It’s always so good to spend time together celebrating our wider community life, seeing the children supporting their school! Thank you so much in advance for your generosity and time-commitment to what is always a fantastic fundraiser! I especially like catching up with you about your child’s enjoyment of school, meeting parents and sometimes grandparents, welcoming new families to the social life of the school and being encouraged by our Year 6’s entrepreneurial skills coming into play as they host some of the sideshows and stalls.

Can I just remind parents to take responsibility for their children’s safety at this event. Please do go over our expectations about looking after our school site, and remind the children not to go into taped-off areas such as the woods, classrooms or adventure trail.

You may have seen on Twitter a photograph of some children enjoying a set of new iPads and laptops. These were purchased by HTSC, thanks to your generosity already this year! Our next instalment of funds will make sure that our design and technology resources and tools are fit for purpose. Toby, our DT leader, has great plans for next year’s curriculum and it would be exciting to see the DT cupboard well equipped! Thank you for giving so much to improve the children’s experience at HTPD!

The much anticipated school trips for Year 2 (to the Natural History Museum) and Year R (to the Lookout at Bracknell) were thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you to parent helpers for making these days out run so smoothly. Getting out of the classroom, exploring the world brings so much joy and interest to school life. Next week, two of our teachers, Georgie and Laura are heading off to Madrid to learn from two of our e-twinning partner schools. They’re excited to ask about the curriculum and teaching approach to art and geography, hoping to bring back exciting ideas. Also next week, it’s Year 6’s turn to head off on their residential trip to Preston Montford in Shropshire – this week long adventure really brings the topic on the Industrial Revolution to life and the children come back with a much deeper understanding of the impact of invention and technological advance. It’ll be good to see the fully restored iron bridge after the last couple of years when it’s been shrouded in scaffolding - let’s hope the weather improves so that the sun shines on the new paintwork!

Whole school notice: Sadly, again this week, we have received complaints about parents parking in ways that infuriate our neighbours. Please do not block driveways. We always teach the children to think about the needs of others and it’s sad when adults end up being disrespectful.

With the summer fair less than a month away preparations are ramping up. Raffle tickets have gone out in book bags today. You should have received two booklets to sell to family and friends (aged above 16 years old), more can be found in the school office if needed. There are some great prizes this year including the luxury hampers put together by each year group and the star prize this year is a Nintendo Switch kindly donated by our sponsors Cavender.

You will be hearing from your class reps soon with donation requests for your year group raffle hamper as well as for summer fair volunteers. Events like the summer fair are vital fundraisers for the school, and without your amazing support they cannot be successful. Last year we were able to refit the entire school with brand new interactive whiteboards thanks to these events. This year we are hoping to raise funds for a class set of iPads and playground upgrades. So please do sign up and donate what you can, even one shift makes all the difference!

HTPD 7/6/19

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a fantastic start to the second half of term! With healthy week running brilliantly at the infants and a wonderful time being had at Bentley Copse with our Year 4 children enjoying their residential, it’s felt like the school is living out its vision of “Learn to Live!” Huge thanks to our teaching staff who go the extra mile to offer these super opportunities.

Now that we are back after the half term break, our thoughts always start to look ahead to the new academic year. I am very excited to be able to let you know about the new class teacher teams for September.

Sadly, James Wyatt, our wonderful Year 6 teacher and English lead will be moving on in the summer. After 4 years here in Guildford, he and his wife are moving back to her home country of Northern Ireland. We know that James will be so greatly missed at HTPD, but that he’ll enjoy finding some new bike trails in the Mountains of Mourne! We wish him well and are very grateful to him for his contribution to life at HTPD. A new teacher will be joining us in Year 2, Lilja Helgadottir. She has worked at Northmead for the past seven years and comes to us with lots of fresh ideas and enthusiasm. Other teachers are also excited about moving between year groups and across the two sites – it’s such a good way of sharing best practice between us….and models beautifully our school value of “embracing the future with hope and confidence”!

We will also continue to have a number of part time staff working across the school. If you do have serious concerns, any comments should be directed to me rather than to your child’s current teacher. Thank you for your understanding in this; asking children who have moved onto secondary school about their memories of HTPD, they often comment on how good it was to have the chance to make new friends as they journeyed through the school. INFANT

Golden Boot challenge 
Over the next four Fridays (7, 14, 21 and 28 June) we will be asking the children how they travel to school. Their usual mode of travel was recorded on the baseline day before half term, and we are hoping they will try out ‘greener’ ways of travelling such as walking, scooting or parking further away and then walking. The class with the highest ‘green scores’ will win the Golden Boot trophy.

Friendship forms
Please remember to return your friendship form (Year R and Year 1 only) to the school office by Monday 10 June.

Teacher-led club cancellations
Owing to school trips, Lego Club with Sarah and Ping Pong with Abigail are cancelled next Tuesday 11 June. Fitness and Fun with Sheena is also cancelled on Wednesday 12th.

Cooking Club
Group 2 Cooking with Claire starts next Tuesday 11 June and finished on Tuesday 9 July.

Skipping Ropes
If you would like to order a skipping rope (following the workshop on Monday), please let the office know by next Thursday 13 June with payment (Children's ropes - £4; Double Dutch ropes 4.5m - £10 per pair; Adult ropes 2.7m - £5; Family ropes 4.5m - £6).

FOPS News

Welcome back after what we hope was a restful half term. We have reached the final few weeks of the school year and seem to be racing towards the summer holidays! It is a busy half term with lots of school events so please read below to find out what is happening.

New FOPS Committee needed for 2019/20
We are starting to think about the FOPS committee next year. If you are interested in being a committee member or class rep next year please contact your current class rep or Kayleigh (kayleigh.ashraf@gmail.com) and we would be happy to have a chat. This is a perfect time to join us and get a feel for what we do. You could even shadow a current committee member as we organise the upcoming Summer Fair.

The vacant committee positions for 2019/2020 academic year are; Chair (or co-chair), Treasurer, Secretary and Class Reps for each class. We have a short document outlining each of these roles which we can email to you if you would like.

With the summer fair less than a month away preparations are ramping up. Letters will be going out shortly with raffle tickets so please keep an eye on book bags. The star prize this year is a Nintendo Switch!

Calling All DIY Enthusiasts!
We have had a look at our usual summer fair games, and some are looking a bit tired and well used. For this year we would love to hear from anyone who would be willing to create any new ‘festival’ themed games (coconut shy, Strongman etc) for us. We could reimburse you for materials, though please contact us before spending anything. Match Funding
Do you or your partner work at a company that offers match funding? This is a scheme where companies will match money raised at a certain event/stall that you volunteer at. Most large companies offer this and if you are planning on volunteering for events like the SUMMER FAIR (6th July) we would love to hear from you! Volunteers and Donations
Shortly messages will go out from your Reps with details of volunteering or donations that are needed for the fair so please keep an eye out for those. Without the time and effort donated by the wonderful parents at Pewley these events wouldn't be the success that they are, so we would like to take this chance to thank-you in advance!

Open Air Cinema Equipment Needed
Do you or someone you know have access to projection and sound equipment? FOPS are planning a new event for the Autumn term which will see the back field turned into an open-air cinema. HTSC News

A big thank you to everyone who brought in donations today. It looks like it’s going to be a great fair. There is still plenty of time to bring in donations if you haven’t had a chance - we know Y4 has been away at Bentley Copse this week. We could do with more of everything - plants in particular. Geraldine is after some runner beans!

Any bottles, booze, chocolates, teddies (there are always lots of teddies!), jolly jars and second hand uniform.
