Junior 15 June 2012

15 June 2012

Dear Parents

It’s been a great week for trips and journeys this week. In fact only Year 2 and Year 5 have not been out!

Our Reception went to see ‘The Tiger who Came to Tea’ at GLive and have followed it up with lots of great activities.

At the other end of the school Year 6 have been away for the week at Preston Montford in Shropshire. This involved studying the history and geography of this area, which was the cradle of industrialisation.

All of these visits add so much to our children’s education as do all the experiences you do with them. We used to talk about ‘making memories’ when our children were young. We continue to do so even though they are now adults!

There are always two types of benefits to these trips. The first is the actual focus and secondly all the added benefits for the children which are the side effects. These included such things as courage; in taking part in the first place, socialisation with friends and other peers, dealing with difficulties in a safe situation. A good example of this is Year 4 who were faced with a very wet night when they were camping out at Shere. Rising to challenges which seem very hard is another benefit. Years 3 certainly rose to the occasion today and coped with strong winds and wet weather and yet were able to continue with their programme at Newlands Corner.

Year 1 went further a field this week with a great visit to Painshill Park.

All in all the children have been outstanding both in their behaviour and in their ability to cope with new situations. Thank you so much for your continued support of school journeys.

We will be sad to lose Thabo Metcalfe as a teacher at the end of term. Thabo trained with us and has had two excellent years in Year 2. He and his family are off to Cambodia, where Thabo will work in an International School.

With best wishes
Richard

Closure at End of Term
Many parents have requested an earlier finish in order to attend the Olympic Torch event. We will therefore finish at 1200 at the Infant School and 1215 at the Junior School on Friday 20th July. There will not be school dinners.

Mufti on Monday 18th June
Please wear mufti and bring in your contributions for the Summer Fair (see HTSC News below).

Netball
There will be a year 3 Introduction to Netball club running on Tuesdays after school 3.15 - 4.30pm between now and the end of term.  It is open to everyone and we look forward to seeing lots of budding players.

Pentathlon
For our special Olympic celebration of sport we have decided this year to involve all of our children in completing a pentathlon. The five events will be a sprint, a ball throw, a long jump, a vertical jump and a long distance run. Both of the runs will be timed and the throw and the jumps will be measured and awarded points. The idea is to encourage all of our children to have a go at and enjoy a variety of athletic events and do their own personal best. The cumulative score will be calculated for each child and everyone will receive a congratulations certificate with a record of their points. There will be medals for the top three girls and boys in each year group and which will be awarded at our celebration evening. Please could you help the children to make sure they bring their PE kit into school, thank you,

George Abbot Summer Ball
As you may know, George Abbot PTA is holding its first Summer Ball on Friday 29th June in aid of the astro pitch to be built at the school. Although the pitch will have a 3G artificial grass surface which is ideal for football, the pitch will also be used for hockey and an existing hockey club, Surrey Spartans, who currently use Surrey Sports Park, want to set up a junior section of the club at the school. This pitch would enable hockey to be taught at George Abbot for the first time. This pitch will therefore benefit all future George Abbot pupils and the wider community including those who belong to football teams like Guildford Saints and Burpham Juniors. We would like to encourage some more future parents to come along and enjoy a fantastic evening at Denbies Vineyard in Dorking (Coaches provided). This is also a great opportunity to meet some new parents and have lots of fun! Details of the event are given in the flyer which is available from the reception desk, the deadline has been extended to Friday 22nd June.

Team Keiller (Louise, Emma (Y4) and Katie (Walnut)) will be running the Tesco 5k Race for Life in Stoke Park this Sunday in aid of Cancer Research in memory of Louise's sister and the girls' lovely Auntie Fi. Please sponsor us if you can. Thank you. www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/louisekeiller. Thank you, Louise Keiller.
