24 January 2020

Dear Parents and Carers,

The term is now well underway and there is a buzz of activity in every year group – the children and staff are living out our school value of “a zest for learning and love of life” as the term’s curriculum is in full swing. Do remember to take a look at this term’s topic maps on the website to keep up with the themes that each year group are covering.

One of my favourite parts of each day is meeting with children sent to show me excellent work. It’s great to reflect with the children on the progress that they’re making, as well as to celebrate really high quality work. I love how much the children glow with pride when they’re awarded a headteacher’s award! These special stickers are highly prized across the school and recognise children demonstrating our school values. It’s always so interesting that some love to wear them proudly, ready to be asked about how the sticker was earned and to tell everyone what it represents. Others carefully fix it to their work as a long-lasting memory of a job really well done, inwardly happy that the effort was worth it. However, the group that really fascinate me are those that choose to take their sticker home, still on its backing paper, ready to place it carefully in a special, safe place. I hope that whatever the case, you manage to find a way to celebrate with your child their successes…I suppose some of us like praise that’s given very publicly, whereas others are more private. It’s part of being unique!

Can I quickly remind everyone that snacks in school should be healthy choices. We try to keep litter to a minimum and by choosing just fruit or vegetables for a breaktime or after-school boost, the children get one of their 5-a-day and their teeth stay clean too! It’s also encouraging to see how many of the children’s packed lunches are really healthy. If you’re short of ideas, and school dinners just don’t work for your child, just follow this link for advice on packed lunch ideas. Remember though that we’re a nut-free school.

Today’s the last day to vote for our school to win the Active Surrey sports award). Do quickly vote for us before the competition closes. We’re so determined to continue to prioritise being healthy – just this week we hosted a massive hockey fixture against Barrow Hills School with 48 players from HTPD playing with such skill, determination and great attitude. It was excellent to see the pitch being so well used. I’m excited to soon tell you about how we plan to refurbish the pitch this summer, if we can raise the funds! Watch this space for details of how to support us through a crowd-funding website that’ll be coming soon!

With best wishes, Clare

Thank you to everyone who came to the meeting on Monday evening. We have a few things planned for the term (see Reminders below) so please put these dates in your diary. We’ll need some help with these events – we’ll give more detail closer to the time.

Cake Sales
Cake sales are back for this term. Please donate cakes for your year group on the dates below (no nuts please). Your class/year reps will be in contact on your Whatsapp groups for volunteers for helping on the day.

Quiz Night
Our infamous quiz night hosted and compiled by the brilliant partnership of Geraldine (school librarian) and her husband, Michael, will be on Saturday 29th February. This event is for grown-ups only, so start gathering your teams together and brush up on your general knowledge. That thing your saw on Reddit might score you a point! There will be a fully stocked bar and food will be included in the ticket price – more information will follow via Parentmail.

Auction Prizes – March Ball
We are planning a ball for the end of March and we are looking for people to help source auction prizes. If you would like to get involved, please contact helen@thomasday.co.uk. Also, if you have a company or business that could offer a prize or if you could offer your time as a prize (ie. an evening of babysitting), please get in touch.

Outdoor Cinema Equipment
Does anyone have access to equipment that could be used as an outdoor cinema in the Summer term?
